Forest Service Dixie National Forest: Pine Valley and Cedar City Ranger Districts Official recreation map printed on two sides. One side shows the Pine Valley Ranger District, which is in southwestern Utah south of Enterprise and state highway 56, but north of St. George. It includes Pine Valley Wildermess. Map coverage extends several miles north and south of National Forest boundaries, and these lands are shown in equal detail. On the reverse is the Cedar City Ranger District, which is east of Cedar City and northeast of Zion National Park. It surrounds Cedar Breaks National Monument. This side of the map includes even more generous portions of nearby lands, including northern Zion.
Both maps employ color tints to distinguish Forest Service, BLM, National Park Service, and Indian lands, with untinted white areas indicating private property. Unusual for a Forest Service map of this scale, elevation contours are included, but are, however, difficult to read in many areas since they were printed too light to show up well against the color tinting. All other symbols are more readily discerned, such as roads of all classes (with Forest Service numbering), trails, recreation sites, ranger stations, mines, springs, land lines, and much more.
This publication also provides basic information about park regulations and facilities, and includes a number of color photos to help give you a feel for the region.
Scale, 1:126,720 (1 inch = 2 miles). Contour interval = 50 meters. Size: about 28 x 36 inches. Folded. Paper.

One side shows the Powell Ranger District, which is in south-central Utah, partly enfolding but mostly north of Bryce Canyon National Park. It overlaps the area shown on the Forest Service Dixie National Forest, Cedar City Ranger District map described above. Map coverage extends several miles beyond National Forest boundaries (and includes a significant chunk of Fishlake National Forest), and these lands are shown in equal detail. On the reverse are the Escalante and Teasdale Ranger Districts, which are contiguous units northeast of Bryce Canyon National Park and southwest of Capitol Reef National Park. This side of the map also includes generous portions of nearby lands, including BLM lands surrounding the town of Escalante.
Both maps employ color tints to distinguish Forest Service, BLM, National Park Service, and State lands, with untinted white areas indicating private property. Unusual for a Forest Service map of this scale, elevation contours are included, but are, however, difficult to read in many areas since they were printed too light to show up well against the color tinting. National Geographic/Trails Illustrated, Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, Utah, USA Two-sided topographic map of the Flaming Gorge area, which actually straddles both Utah and Wyoming. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
Stan Jones' & Steve Ward's Boating and Exploring Map and Guide to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area"Everything you want to know about Lake Powell." With about 40 color photos of what to see and where to see it. Only about 1/4 of this publication is, in fact, devoted to the map. The extensive text is keyed to specific areas on the rather simple map, giving the reader a good description of each area, along with details on history, camping, boat accessibility, and fishing possibilities.
Color illustrations depict the game fish found in the reservoir, accompanied by text giving notes on each. Smaller illustrations and lesser notes show four endangered fish species.
This map is primarily for boaters. While the map does show topographic contours of the surrounding land, they are not very expertly drawn and are difficult to interpret, even for experienced map users, since no elevations are given. This edition shows the locations of buoys in the reservoir as of June, 2006, a very useful feature since the water level is over 90 feet from highest levels.
Scale: 3/8 inch = about 1 mile. Size: 34 x 22 inches. Folded. Paper.

National Geographic / Trails Illustrated, Glen Canyon NRA, Capitol Reef NP, Rainbow Bridge NM, Utah/ArizonaTopographic map of this region which is primarily in southern Utah—only a small part of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is in Arizona. This is a far better map of Lake Powell and the region than the Stan Jones map above, though the latter has much more information. The small scale of the map is more useful for four-wheel drive and for boating, and not much for hiking or mountain biking. For a better hiking map of Capitol Reef National Park see the Earthwalk Press map above.
The map includes several details of marinas and other docking areas, a chart explaining buoys, boating regulations and safety, and background on each of the parks covered. Printed on two sides on waterproof plastic.

Bureau of Land Management, Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument Official map and guide printed on two sides entices you to visit this fascinating area. The publication features excellent color photos, evocative prose, visiting information, and a shaded relief map.The map covers about one-half of one side, and gives a more general view of the region. It shows paved roads of the area, plus "selected" graded and primitive dirt roads. It does not show trails (you should use the Trails Illustrated map above for that). But it does show campgrounds, picnic areas, trailheads, and BLM information stations. The map serves best as a guide to the geography of the area, with shaded relief vividly displaying the varied and rugged topography.
Scale, about 1:270,000 (1 inch = about 4.3 miles). Size: about 27½ x 25½. Folded. Paper.

Forest Service Manti-La Sal National Forest: Moab and Monticello Ranger Districts Detailed recreation map printed on two sides, portrays these areas in southeastern Utah. On one side is the Monticello Ranger District, which includes Dark Canyon Wilderness. It is located northeast of Natural Bridges National Monument, northwest of Blanding, and west of Monticello itself. Generous amounts of neighboring lands are included, with the same detail. On the reverse is the Moab Ranger District, which is east of Moab, and which extends over seven miles into Colorado. Even more generous portions of surrounding properties are included, and it looks to me like a good three-quarters of the area covered is outside of the National Forest, much of it BLM, but also including a sizeable piece of Arches National Park.
On both maps, color tints readily distinguish land management: Forest Service, BLM, state, National Park, and (lacking a tint) private lands. Shows roads of all classes, with Forest Service roads as well as highways numbered; includes trails, land lines, elevations of selected high points, recreation sites, points of interest, mines, springs, ranger stations, and much more.
This publication includes many excellent color photos which give the flavor of the region, plus basic information about recreational activities and regulations.

See Moab Map (below) for a more northerly portion of Manti-La Sal National Forest
National Geographic/Trails Illustrated, Moab North Outdoor Recreation Map, Utah Excellent new topographic map; along with the companion Moab South map (described below), this is considered to be an upgrade of the old Moab Mountain Bike Map. The map is printed on two sides, and uses the improved color scheme that National Geographic has been using on its newest maps, including shaded relief to show the form of the landscape. On one side is a map covering the area from Moab north, including all of Arches National Park, and public lands along and near the Colorado River about 43 miles upriver from the town of Moab. On the reverse is a western and slightly more northerly extension of the main map, extending over to the Green River and north to the town of Green River and Interstate 70. In addition, there are two enlargements of areas shown on the main map: One is entitled "Monitor & Merrimac Buttes / Bartlett Wash / Sovereign Trail" and the second shows the town of Moab in detail (including names of major streets) and the area to the east including all of Sand Flats Recreation Area.
The new maps show roads, trails, trailheads, parking areas, campgrounds, picnic areas, river access, information centers, and more. Mountain biking trails are specially labelled and rated for difficulty. "Jeep" trails are also specially marked. (It's a bit surprising, though, that the publishers use the trade name Jeep, rather than a more accurate "4WD"—four wheel drive—designation; USGS maps have been replacing the former with the latter as their quads have been reprinted since so many brands besides Jeep are in use.) Point-to-point mileages for dirt roads and trails are indicated. Color tints indicate the location of private and state lands. Gridded with UTM lines for GPS users.
Text boxes and charts provide further information on the area, including temperatures, minimum-impact techniques, trail ratings, safety, and more.
Scale of main map, about 1:70,000 (1 inch = about 1.1 miles); contour interval = 100 feet. Scale of detail maps, about 1:35,000 (1 inch = about 0.55 mile); contour interval = 50 feet. Size: about 37½ x 25½ inches. Folded. Plastic.

Duwain Whitis and Tom Martin, RiverMaps Guide to the San Juan River: Montezuma Creek to Clay Hills Crossing, Utah First edition of a comprehensive map book and guide to floating southeast Utah's relatively gentle San Juan River. Features USGS topographic maps updated and enhanced with easy to read and essential information for your river trip, including campsites, river miles, points of interest and location of rapids. Detailed descriptions of the areas depicted for each of the fourteen map pages are included on facing pages. The maps all have a "go with the flow" orientation, with downstream always at the top of each map. Black and white photos supplement the text, and give you a feel for the landscape ahead.
Introductory sections describe the region in general, and give specific information on permit requirements, river use regulations, area geology, archaeology, and desert life, plus an important admonition on resource portection.
The book is printed on synthetic waterproof paper that is also tear resistant.
