Amistad National Recreation Area

USGS Amistad National Recreation Area, Texas-Coahuila
Detailed topographic map printed on two sides.  On one side is the Del Rio and vicinity map, which covers the main body of the recreation area around Amistad Reservoir.  The reverse side continues the coverage to the northwest, Langtry and Vicinity; this includes the narrow portion of the park which consists of the US side of the Rio Grande, and the lower reaches of the Pecos River.

Map detail does not stop at the US border, but also includes the lands and waters on the Mexican side as well (part of the state of Coahuila.  Elevation contours (in meters), show the form of the land, and are also included for the places submerged by the reservoir.  Roads of all classes are plotted, with special symbols showing recreation sites such as campgrounds, picnic area, and boat launches, plus other facilities such as ranger stations, gas stations, restroom access, telephones, and grocery stores.  Also shows boundary buoys.

Insets show details of two of the recreation sites, and another describes buoys, boating signs, basic boating rules, and storm warning flags.  (Unfortunately, the insets cover up portions of the adjacent land areas outside the recreation area, so the maps does not cover as much of the possibly private lands in the area as it otherwise could.)

Supplementary text describes the recreation area, its activities, and basic regulations.  This is presented in both English and Spanish.  The legend describing map symbols is also bilingual.

Scale, 1:50,000 (1 inch = about 0.8 mile).  Contour interval = 10 meters on US side, 20 meters on Mexico side of the border.  Size: about 46 x 28 inches.  Folded.  Plastic.
Published by US Geological Survey in cooperation with the National Park Service, 1985.  New.

 Big Bend National Park

National Geographic/Trails Illustrated, Big Bend National Park, Texas
Newly revised topographic map of the southwest Texas park bordering on the Rio Grande.  One side shows the entire park and adjacent areas, including most of Black Gap Wildlife Management Area and a portion of Big Bend Ranch State Park.  Almost no detail is shown on the Mexico side of the border.  Elevation contours are enhanced with shaded relief to show the form of the land.  (See sample at right.)  A green tint shows the extent of woodlands.  Other details include roads of all classes, trails, trail mileages, river mileages, ranger stations, information centers, points of interest, campgrounds, viewpoints, trailheads, restrooms, picnic areas, gas stations, parking, and more.  Insets show Rio Grande Village at larger scale, an index map to USGS quads for the region and a location map showing the park in relation to the major highways of Texas and adjacent states.  Informational boxes discuss backcountry use, wildlife, "Leave No Trace" outdoor ethics, and basic facts about the park and its facilities.

On the reverse side there is a larger scale (more-detailed) map of the Chisos Mountains area (an especially good area for backpacking).  It has the same attributes as the main map.

Scale (main map):  about 1:133,333 (1 inch = about 2.1 miles);  scale of Chisos Mountains detail about 1:27,500 (1 inch = about 0.43 mile).  Contour interval:  100 feet (50 feet on Chisos Mountains detail).  Size: about 37½ x 25½ inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

USGS Medium-scale Topo Quads

Stephenville, Texas 1:100,000 scale metric topographic map
If this single quad from central Texas seems like an odd choice for a page devoted to Texas parks and forests, you are correct.  It is here available due to a USGS fulfillment mistake!  But if you happen to be  interested in this region, here's what the map covers: the mostly rural and hilly area around and including the towns of Cisco, Eastland, Ranger, Desdemona, Carbon, Gorman, Rising Star, De Leon, Dublin, Bluffdale, and the title city of Stephenville.  Bodies of water shown include Lake Leon, Proctor Lake, Sabana River, and Leon River.  The map is bounded by longitudes 99 and 98 degrees, latitudes 32 and 32 degrees 30 minutes.  It is printed on one side only.

Features shown include elevation topographic contours at 20 meter-intervals.  Green tints show the extent of woodlands and scrubland.  Most evident on the map is the road system, which distinguishes major and secondary roads.  Also shows county boundaries, gravel pits, transmission lines, pipelines, radio towers, and other cultural features.  (See sample above right.)

Scale, 1:100,000 (1 inch = about 1.6 miles).  Contour interval: 20 meters.  Size: about 43 x 24 inches.  Folded.  Paper.
