Political World Wall Maps

World Maps—Political
Political maps emphasize the territory claimed by each nation rather than the physical features of the earth. They vary in size, projection (the means by which the spherical surface of the earth is "projected" on to a flat piece of paper), amount and quality of detail, and supplementary features. All that we sell are up-to-date in names and boundaries of nations.

Hema Maps: The World, Pacific Centred (with flags)
A finely detailed political map which places the western Pacific Ocean at the center. National boundaries are emphasized, with each colored a distinct hue. One of the bonus supplementary features of the map is that it is bordered with full-color flags of each of the world’s nations. Shows major roads and railroads, important cities (with capitals distinguished), airports, major ports, rivers, major mountain peaks (with elevations in meters), lakes, and permanent ice. Clocks at the top of the map indicate relative times. Symbols are explained in the legend in English, with translations in French, German, and Spanish.
While mountain ranges are labeled, the map does not have relief shading to show their form, nor are undersea mountains or trenches indicated at all.
The projection is a Bartholomew-modified Gall's Stereographic (centered on 150 degrees east longitude), which keeps lines of latitude parallel, and has moderate curvature of lines of longitude. This results in moderate distortion in shapes, and minimal distortion of relative size in the middle latitudes. As you get much above 45 degrees north or south latitude, however, distortion of relative size becomes marked, though not to the extent of the Mercator projection. This map centers the Equator a bit below the middle, cutting off most of Antarctica (which would appear grossly distorted anyway).
Scale (at 45 degrees north and south), 1:30,000,000 (1 inch = about 475 miles). Size: about 40 inches wide x 28 inches high. Rolled. Paper.

National Geographic The World Enlarged Decorator-style
Excellent political map of the world, which yet shows physical topography on land and under the oceans. National boundaries are emphasized with rich, contrasting colors which leave no doubt as to the extent of each country.

Supplementary maps in the corners show north polar regions, Antarctica, a small physical world map showing the natural coloration of the planet, and a small physical map showing the relative elevations of the world.
Scale at Equator, about 1:24,000,000 (1 inch = about 379 miles). Size: about 70 inches wide x 49 inches tall. Rolled. Paper.
National Geographic Maps, 2004. New.

National Geographic World Executive Antique Style
Excellent political map of the world, which yet shows physical topography on land and under the oceans. National boundaries are marked with soft distinct color tints, and the whole color scheme is styled like antique maps of centuries ago. But the borders and country names are quite up-to-date!
The map employs the Winkel Tripel Projection. All flat maps of the world distort either relative size or shape of the world’s features (and often both). This projection is an excellent compromise: by curving the lines of longitude, distortion of size is minimized but so also is distortion of shape. For example, the much over-used Mercator projection horribly distorts the polar regions such that Greenland appears larger than Africa. (The alternative “Peters Projection,” touted by a segment of idealistic but geographically-challenged people as the best choice for a world map, is equal-area but horribly distorts the shapes of our planet’s features.)
Details shown include rivers, mountain ranges and peaks, rivers, important cities, and international airports. Shaded relief shows the topography both on the land and under the sea. Supplementary maps in the corners show north polar regions, Antarctica, a small world map showing the basic climate zones of the planet, and another showing human population densities.
Scale at Equator, 1:38,931,000 (1 inch = 614 miles). Size: about 43 inches wide x 29 inches tall. Rolled. Paper.

National Geographic World Executive Antique Style—imperfect copy

National Geographic World Mural, Executive Antique-style
This map is the same design as the previous one but covers an entire wall, and measures about nine and a half feet wide by over six feet high. It is so big, it comes in three slightly-overlapping, latex coated strips which can be mounted like wallpaper. Instructions provided.
Like the other antique-style maps, it is an up-to-date political map that merely looks old. The projection used is the Winkel Tripel. As this is an enlarged version of smaller maps, the print is larger, but there are no additional place names or other details shown.
Size: about 116 inches wide x 76 inches high (when assembled). Rolled. Coated paper, three sections.
National Geographic Maps, ca 2003 or later. New.
Item #NG-620092. Shipping weight: 4.1 lbs. Publisher's price: $99.99. Your price: $90.00 (Out of stock; unlikely to restock this year).

National Geographic World, Political, Laminated (Classic-style)
The style of this map will be familiar to generations of National Geographic readers: shaded relief indicates mountainous regions, and national boundaries are accented with color tints. Unlike the Decorator and Executive Antique-style maps described above, this style does not show shaded relief for the ocean floor; instead, graduated color-tints show the depth of the ocean (i.e. the deeper the ocean, the deeper blue the tint).
As with the other National Geographic political maps on this page, it uses the Winkel Tripel projection to minimize distortion of shapes and relative sizes. Features the same amount of detail as the Mural version, but with smaller print. It is also laminated for a more durable surface.
Scale at Equator, 1:38,931,000 (1 inch = 614 miles). Size: about 43 inches wide x 29 inches tall. Rolled. Laminated.

National Geographic World Explorer map
This world map is very similar to the "Decorator" series described above (same coloration, also uses the Winkel Tripel projection) but is smaller and printed on thinner paper. This is a great size for those who have limited space (it would indeed be a crowded office, study, or apartment which did not have room for this one), and a fairly economical price for a map of such detail (see sample at lower left).
Like the Decorator series, the map emphasizes national boundaries with distinct colors filling in each nation, yet also features shaded relief to reveal the form of the mountains.
Scale at Equator, 1:51,969,000 (1 inch = about 820 miles). Size: about 32 inches wide x 20 inches high. Rolled. Paper.

MapArt The World (Le Monde) Wall Map
Detailed political map with bilingual English-French major place names and legend. It is centered on the Prime Meridian in the Atlantic Ocean, and clearly distinguishes each nation with color tints. Shows the boundaries of US states, Canadian provinces and territories, and Australian states and territories; also shows major cities and highways, rivers, and mountains. Includes lines of latitude and longitude at ten degree intervals. Though there is shaded relief to show the location of mountains, it is printed so lightly as to be of little use.
The main advantages of this map over other world maps we sell are the English-French place names and that there is an extensive index of place names on the bottom which helps you locate the cities shown.
Scale at Equator, 1:40,500,000 (1 inch = about 639 miles). Size: about 40 x 28 inches. Projection not stated, but similar to Van der Grinten and Winkel Tripel. Rolled. Laminated.

ODT What's Up? South! World Map (laminated)
This new south-at-top map is a great educational tool. As the publisher rightly notes, the convention of having north upwards on a map is just that, a convention. True "up" from the standpoint of we on the earth itself is away from the center, and the earth in space has no inherent up or down. To emphasize this point, this map includes an inset which shows six global views from various angles. In addition, other inset maps show examples of other projections with notes on their merits and limitations.
The main map is a Van der Grinten projection, which is a fair compromise between preservation of actual shapes, with less distortion of relative sizes than the Mercator projection. It is fairly detailed and shows major cities, railways, rivers, peaks (with elevations in meters), and ocean depths (also shown in meters), and each nation is clearly distinguished with color tints. Mountainous regions are indicated with shaded relief (which, however, is not as precise in its detail as National Geographic's).
For the scale of the map, the size of the print is larger than most other world maps, a feature which makes the labels easier to read. Clocks across the top show the world's approximate time zones. Because it omits the Antarctic region, the map shows the Equator top of center.
In addition to the educational insets at the bottom of the map, it is accompanied by a four page folder. This discusses world map conventions, types of projections, and in general challenges basic assumptions of up and down. It is quite well written, and successfully avoids preachy political propagandizing while legitimately inspiring readers to think about world map issues.
Scale at the Equator, 1:28,500,000 (1 inch = about 450 miles). Size: about 56 x 36 inches. Rolled. Laminated. Comes in clear, rigid plastic tube.
