Shipping rates

Shipping fees are determined by weight and distance from our store here in Arizona.  Books, and some lightweight items are eligible for special lower rates, but only if all items in the order are eligible for the same rate.  See the First Class and Media Mail sections below for details on these special rates.  Rates have increased effective May 10th, 2008.

Standard rates:
Most standard orders are shipped by UPS Ground Service or US Postal Service (USPS) Priority Mail.  Time to delivery for standard shipping usually runs up to seven days, faster within or near Arizona.

To calculate standard shipping rates, first determine the total shipping weight by adding the shipping weights that are provided with each item description.  (Do not add shipping weights of rolled maps and charts to other items, because items shipped rolled need to be shipped separately and require a separate shipping fee.)

Then find your shipping region in the rate lists below.  The total weight of the order determines your shipping fee.

* Note: The PayPal shopping cart will collect shipping fees based on the same weight schedule, except for the asterisked weight ranges.  These are lumped in with the next heavier category, due to PayPal only allowing five weight ranges to be programmed.  (If you use the shopping cart and your order falls in one of the asterisked weight ranges, we will refund the exces amount if it is $1.00 or more.)

Example:
You want to buy one National Geographic United States Classic Wall Map, one Rite in the Rain All-Weather 4x6-inch notebook, and one copy of the book The Omnivore’s Dilemma.  From each item description, you note that the shipping weight of the wall map is 1.5 lbs, the notebook is 0.4 lb, and the book is 1.3 lbs.  Since the wall map is shipped rolled, the fee is calculated separately.  So you are going to have one package with a shipping weight of 1.5 lbs and a second package containing the notebook and the book at 1.7 lbs shipping weight.

In this example, you want to have them sent to Wyoming.  You see from the rates below that Wyoming is in region 3.  You look below to the region 3 prices and see that both packages are within the 1.01 to 2.0 lbs category, so the shipping charge for each package will be $6.50.  Since $7.50 + $7.50 = $15.00, that is the amount you will enter as your shipping fee.

Region 1: Arizona
—If total shipping weight is 0.01 to 0.4 lb, packing and shipping fee is $2.75.
—If total shipping weight is 0.41 to 0.8 lb, packing and shipping fee is $3.75.
*—If total shipping weight is 0.81 to 1.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $5.00.
—If total shipping weight is 1.01 to 2.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $5.50.
*—If total shipping weight is 2.01 to 3.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $6.50.
—If total shipping weight is 3.01 to 4.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $7.50.
—If total shipping weight is 4.01 lbs or more, packing and shipping fee is $10.00.

Region 2: California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah
—If total shipping weight is 0.01 to 0.8 lb, packing and shipping fee is $5.50.
*—If total shipping weight is 0.81 to 1.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $6.00.
—If total shipping weight is 1.01 to 2.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $7.00.
*—If total shipping weight is 2.01 to 3.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $8.50.
—If total shipping weight is 3.01 to 4.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $10.00.

*—If total shipping weight is 0.81 to 1.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $6.50.
—If total shipping weight is 1.01 to 2.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $8.00.
*—If total shipping weight is 2.01 to 3.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $10.00.
—If total shipping weight is 3.01 to 4.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $13.00.
—If total shipping weight is 4.01 to 6.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $15.50.
—If total shipping weight is 6.01 lbs or more, packing and shipping fee is $16.00.

Region 5: Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee, Wisconsin
—If total shipping weight is 0.01 to 0.8 lb, packing and shipping fee is $6.00.
*—If total shipping weight is 0.81 to 1.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $6.50.
—If total shipping weight is 1.01 to 2.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $8.50.
*—If total shipping weight is 2.01 to 3.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $11.50.
—If total shipping weight is 3.01 to 4.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $14.50.

Region 6: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia
—If total shipping weight is 0.01 to 0.8 lb, packing and shipping fee is $6.00.
*—If total shipping weight is 0.81 to 1.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $6.50.
—If total shipping weight is 1.01 to 2.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $9.00.
*—If total shipping weight is 2.01 to 3.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $12.00.

These cities in Alaska: Anchorage, Indian, Anchor Point, Chugiak, Clam Gulch, Cooper Landing, Eagle River, Girdwood, Homer, Hope, Kasilof, Kenai, Moose Pass, Soldotna, Seward, Palmer, Ninilchik, Sterling, Wasilla, Fairbanks
(Note: The above list of cities and towns is a general guide only.  If the destination is in a rural area not within these towns, even though the town name is part of the address, region 8 fees may apply.)

Anywhere in Puerto Rico is also region 7.

Media Mail:
If ordering only books, you may choose this slow, budget option from the US Postal Service. Book descriptions either specifically state the item is a book, or tip you off listing the book in the book section or by giving you dimensions that are book-size plus giving you a page count—properties other kinds of items don’t possess.  Maps are not eligible, though bound books of maps (i.e. road and reference atlases) are eligible because they are books.  Folders that have no binding, not even staples, are not books because they are not bound.

Notebooks and bound lined or blank books such as the Rite in the Rain products we sell are not eligible for Media Mail.


Media Mail usually takes five to ten days for delivery, but can take longer, especially during the December holiday rush.  Two, even four weeks delivery time is not unheard of.

Media Mail is for domestic orders only; it is not available for orders sent to Canada (and we don’t ship anywhere other than the US or Canada).

Media Mail is the same rate for all 50 states and possessions.

To calculate fees for Media Mail items, note down the shipping weight(s), then add them together.

—If total shipping weight is 0.4 lb. or less, do not request Media Mail.  First Class Mail will be faster at the same or lower cost (see below).
—If total shipping weight is 0.41 to 1.99 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $3.50.
—If total shipping weight is 2.0 to 4.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $4.25.
—If total shipping weight is 4.01 to 6.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $4.75.
—If total shipping weight is 6.01 to 8.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $5.75.
—If total shipping weight is 8.01 to 10.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $6.50.
—If total shipping weight is 10.01 lbs or more, packing and shipping fee is $7.00.


First Class Mail:
This is a quick and economical option when your order has a total shipping weight of 0.8 lb or less (that’s 8/10ths of a pound, not 8 pounds).

First Class often gets your purchases to you as fast as Priority Mail (2 to 3 days), but can take up to a few days longer.  Rarely, it can be delayed even longer.

First Class rates are the same for all states except Arizona.  We give Arizona deliveries a little discount for keeping the business in-state, and to help offset the tax.   To calculate fees for First Class Mail items, note down the shipping weight(s), then add them together.

For all US states and possessions but Arizona:
—If total shipping weight is up to 0.4 lb, packing and shipping fee is $3.00
—If total shipping weight is 0.41 to 0.6 lb, packing and shipping fee is $3.75
—If total shipping weight is 0.61 to 0.80 lb, packing and shipping fee is $4.25

—For deliveries to Arizona, deduct $0.25 from the rates above.



Shipments to Canada
Canadian deliveries are sent by air only for small parcels, usually by ground for heavier ones, and generally take five to ten days for delivery.

Canadian customers are responsible for paying any taxes, duties, or fees imposed by the Canadian or provincial governments.  These are not covered by our charges.  Our past customers indicate that the authorities are inconsistent collecting these fees even when applicable, so if you’ve never had to pay them before, you might still be charged on a future order.

Note that we do not mail rolled maps or raised relief maps to Canada or elsewhere out of the country.  We also do not mail items published in Canada back to Canada, since this is a waste of resources (for example, maps published by the Canadian firms MapArt, International Travel Maps, and G.M. Johnson; the item descriptions tell you the place each was published from).  We’ll make an exception if at least 50% of your order by weight did not originate in Canada.

To calculate shipping fees to Canada, note down the shipping weight of each item from the website description and add them together.

—If total shipping weight is 0.01 to 0.8 lb, packing and shipping fee is $6.00.
—If total shipping weight is 0.81 to 2.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $12.00.
—If total shipping weight is 2.01 to 4.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $18.00.
—If total shipping weight is 4.01 to 6.0 lbs, packing and shipping fee is $25.00.
—If total shipping weight is 6.01 lbs or more, packing and shipping fee is $28.00.

All prices are in US Dollars.


Shipments outside the US and Canada
We ship to selected European and east Asian nations only, plus Israel, Australia and New Zealand.  The exact list is as follows: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltor, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and United Kingdom.

These international shipments are sent by air only, and generally take seven to fourteen days for delivery.  If shipping weight is over 4.0 pounds, please email us for a shipping quote.

International customers are responsible for paying any taxes, duties, or fees imposed by their own government.  These are not covered by our charges.  Our past customers indicate that the authorities are inconsistent collecting these fees even when applicable, so if you’ve never had to pay them before, you might still be charged on a future order.
