Nantahala National Forest

The lands covered are immediately south and southwest of the west half of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. One side shows the west part of the region, and includes a significant portion of Cherokee National Forest on the Tennessee side of the border (within which are Bald River Gorge Wilderness, Citico Creek Wilderness, and a part of Joyce Kilmer Slickrock Wilderness); and on the North Carolina side, the remainder of Joyce Kilmer Slickrock Wilderness, Hiwassee Lake (no surprise there), and the town of Murphy.On the reverse is the east side of the region (overlapping the coverage of the Nantahala & Cullasaja Gorges map described below), which includes almost all of Fontana Lake, Santeetlah Lake, Snowbird Mountains, Nantahala Lake, Chatuge Lake, and a long section of the Appalachian Trail.

Pisgah National Forest

The newest title in the southern Appalachian series! This topographic map, printed on two sides, covers the National Forest and adjacent lands extending from near Asheville east to Morganton. On one side, the map covers the west side of this region, with Spivey Gap and a few miles of the Appalachian Trail in the upper left corner, the town of Black Mountain in the lower left, and Gillepsie Gap (and the Museum of North Carolna Minerals at middle right. In between, the Blue Ridge Parkway runs across the center, with Mount Mitchell and the State Park of the same name just below center. Important roads depicted included Interstate 40, US 19 and 19W, state 80, US 70, and state 226.On the reverse side, coverage continues eastward, and includes Grandfather Mountain at the top, Lake James and the town of Marion at lower left, Morgantown at lower right, more of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Linville Gorge at left of center.
The maps employ shaded relief to enhance the elevation contours, and a brown tint to distinguish the extensive private lands within the boundaries of the National Forest. Trails are numbered and keyed to charts. Shows roads fo all classes, with not only forest roads numbered, but also local roads in the neighboring private lands. This map covers the portions of adjacent Cherokee and Pisgah National Forests which are in extreme northeastern Tennessee and northwestern North Carolina right near the border with Virginia. The map does not show either National Forest in their entirety.
The west side of the map includes the title lakes plus Holston Mountain, Big Laurel Branch Wilderness, Pond Mountain Wilderness, Elizabethton, Erwin, Little Mountain, Stone Mountain, Unaka Mountain Wilderness, Roan Mountain State Park, Bald Mountains, and Pumpkin Patch Mountain.
