Benchmark Maps New Mexico Road & Recreation Atlas Excellent atlas divided into three major sections. Two of them cover the whole state in detail in twelve double-page spreads. The maps in the two sections are the same scale, and show the same features: relief shading to show the form of the mountains, roads, towns, recreation sites—everything you expect from a good road map and more: even GPS grids. The difference is that the first of these sections emphasizes the landscape, and is colored to vividly depict the elevation levels of the state (see sample above right). In contrast, the second section is colored to show land ownership: the approximate boundaries of lands managed by the state, the federal government, or by Native American tribes. The third major section is devoted to comprehensive city maps. Albuquerque and vicinity (including Rio Rancho) is presented on fifteen pages of detailed street maps. Four and a half pages are given to Santa Fe (the half page is a detail map of the downtown area); Roswell is covered in four pages, and Las Cruces in five. Each of these city sections has its own street index, too.
Besides the three major sections, there are some bonus features: a two page physical road map of the contiguous United States showing interstate, US, southern Canadian, and northern Mexican highways; a two-page overview map of New Mexico showing all major and some minor roads; and four pages of charts listing recreational facilities, providing such information as contact numbers, elevations, facilities available, and activities permitted.
Scale of landscape and public lands maps, 1:525,000 (1 inch = about 8.3 miles); scale of city maps vary, most are 1:28,000 (1 inch = about 0.44 mile).
Benchmark Maps, 2006 (fifth edition). 96 pages, about 10½ x 15½ inches. Paperback. New.
