DeLorme, Trail Map & Guide to the White Mountain National Forest Detailed topographic map, printed on two sides. On one side is the map itself, which shows most, but not all, of the National Forest, leaving out a few areas on the edge with few or no trails. Elevation contours are accented by shaded relief to show the form of the land. It is difficult to find the boundaries of the Forest on the map: If they are there at all, they are equivalent to the outer edge of the "hiking region" boundaries that are inconspicuously marked. (These hiking regions are named on the map, but it is only by gazing at the map and finally noticing that the large red letters which at first seem unconnected actually spell at names corresponding to the hiking regions. Because of the overall color scheme, this lettering does not stand out as well as it could.) Wooded areas are given a green tint—though the few open areas are tinted yellow-green, so they are not easy to distinguish.Roads and trails, however, are easy enough to discern. The map also shows railroads, county and township boundaries, covered bridges, points of interest, ski areas, lookout towers, gates, trail shelters, trail huts, campsites, ranger stations, and more. The Apppalachian Trail is specially designated.
The reverse side is completely devoted to text, in small print, and includes a general introduction to the region, several paragraphs on the geology of the White Mountains, a glossary of mountaineering terms, camping information, equipment checklists, and trail sense. The majority of this side is given to one paragraph descriptions of something like 200 trails.
Scale, 1:100,000 (1 inch = about 1.6 mile). Contour interval = 100 feet. Size: about 36 x 24 inches. Folded. Plastic.
