Robert A. Day, How to Write & Publish a Scientific Paper, 5th Edition
"Good scientific writing" says the author in his Preface "is not a matter of life and death; it is much more serious than that." With sagely advice amidst witticisms (or vice versa?) Robert Day's 5th edition of his now standard work continues to "help scientists and students of the sciences in all disciplines to prepare manuscripts that will have a high probability of being accepted for publication and of being completely understood when they are published." This edition incorporates changes brought about by the widespread use of email, electronic journals, and the world wide web.

James Randi, Flim-Flam!  Psychics, ESP, Unicorns and other Delusions
Introduction by Isaac Asimov
Now over 20 years in print, James Randi’s exposé of charlatans and paranormal claims is still a refreshing guide to how nonsense can be accepted by so many, and as a model for using critical thinking, basic investigation, and the scientific method to reveal falsity.  A professional magician and escape artist himself, he is ever the showman, and he does not conceal his delight in revealing fraud and spotlighting the gullible.

For “the past thirty-five years of his professional life, he has . . . been active as an investigator of the paranormal, occult, and supernatural claims that have impressed the thinking of the public for a generation: ESP, psychokinesis, psychic detectives, levitation, psychic surgery, UFOs, dowsing, astrology, and many others.  Those of us unable to discriminate between genuine scientific research and the pseudoscientific nonsense that has resulted in fantastic theories and fancies have long needed [this book].”

James Randi, The Mask of Nostradamus: The Prophecies of the World’s Most Famous Seer
A scholarly and entertaining investigation of the supposed prophetic verses of the sixteenth century astrologer and physician Nostradamus.  Randi, himself a magician and thus well-trained in the arts of deception, effectively illuminates the age in which  Nostradamus lived.  He then exposes the rationalizations of his usually rather vague predictions made by followers through the centuries---and cites the spectacular errors made on the rare times the “Seer” gave specific dates for less nebulous predictions.  Randi is an outstanding debunker, and in exposing the fallacies of Nostradamus admirers, strengthens the good sense we need to understand science—and this is why we include this book in our general science section.
