Routes of early explorers are also shown. Perhaps the best feature of the map are the dozens of short paragraphs which give notes on wildlife, geography, climate, history, and more. USGS North America Shaded Relief Wall Map
National Atlas of the United States of America series
Using the wonders of digital datasets, the US Geological Survey has created this striking physical map of North America. Graduated color tints represent elevation levels, and shaded relief has been employed to show the form of the mountains and hills. The topographical detail is exquisite. You almost need a magnifier to appreciate the fine features of this map.Covers all of North America except the extreme northeastern portions of Greenland, and also shows adjacent Russia, all of Iceland, most of Ireland, all of the Carribean, extreme northwestern South America, and Hawaii, off in the Pacific—not a part of North America, but we don't want to leave out a US state, do we? Place names are limited to major bodies of water, countries, and US states. Political boundaries are also limited to countries and US states. Lakes are shown, but not rivers—though you can figure out where many of the rivers are because they carve canyons and valleys, and these show up in the highly detailed relief shading. Perhaps needless to say—but we'll mention it anyway, so as to emphasize the point—this map does not show cities, highways, railroads, or other cultural features.
A text box explains some of the details of how the map was made. The key gives the color code for the 23 different elevation levels on the map.

When a map covers almost all of the extent of the globe, it is necessary to distort, but the cartographers have strategically grossly distorted only areas of open ocean.
