Trail & Recreation Maps
National Geographic/Trails Illustrated Acadia National Park, Maine Excellent, newly revised topographic map printed on two sides. The new edition now features shaded relief and an improved color scheme (see sample at right). On one side is a shaded relief map (but with no elevation contours) of the full region, including all of the scattered lands of the National Park and the surrounding private lands ranging from Deer Isle in the west to Prospect Harbor in the northeast. At this scale, the map shows paved and dirt roads, towns and other settlements, township boundaries, ferry routes, and wooded areas. Two insets show Isle au Haut and the Schoodic Peninsula in greater detail, including topographic contours, trails, campgrounds, parking areas, ranger stations, and GPS waypoints. This side of the sheet also features extensive text decribing the area and its attractions, camping, weather, safety, and leave no trace outdoor practices. The reverse side is devoted almost entirely to the detail map of Mt. Desert Island, the largest portion of the park and the most visited. It shows topographic contours, roads, carriage paths, trails, parking areas, campgrounds, and other visitor facilities. Accompanying text rates trails of the island.
Scale, regional map: about 1:100,000 (1 inch = about 1.6 miles); scale of Mt. Desert Island, Isle au Haut, and Schoodic Peninsula details: about 1:35,000 (1 inch = about ½ mile). Contour interval: 25 feet. Size: about 25½ x 37½ inches. Folded. Plastic.

The Complete Map & Guide of Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor & Mt. Desert IslandBy Jim Witherell, Registered Maine Guide
Detailed topographic map printed on two sides, shows the Mt. Desert Island part of Acadia National Park, but not the more isolated units. On one side is the western part of the region, the eastern side is on the reverse. The maps are updated composites of USGS topo quads. The additions, corrections, and changes are more primitive than you will likely see in other commercially-sold maps. The author has hand-colored boundary markings. You can also see where he has whited-out old boundaries of labels, and the various trail-ratings and text additions have obviously been pasted-on the master copy. These are more or less just cosmetic problems; a real difficulty is that the USGS quads used have different contour intervals in different units. Although the legend lists a contour interval of 20 feet, this is not true for the northern portions of the map, which have a contour interval of 6 meters, and some southern portions, which have a contour interval of 10 feet. This is not noted on the map, so it could be confusing in the field if you don't know this.
Amateurish cartography aside, the map has obviously been well-researched by someone who knows the area first-hand, and that is its greatest strength. He also provides a generous amount of information on the area, including local business addresses and phone numbers, trail descriptions, and other recreational activities. There is also an enlargement of the streets of Bar Harbor.
Scale, 1:24,000 (1 inch = 2000 feet = about 0.38 mile). Contour interval = 20 feet, or 10 feet, or 6 meters. Size, about 23¾ x 36 inches. Folded. Paper.

DeLorme's Map & Guide Allagash & St. John Recreational map printed on two sides covers the far northwestern region of the state, extending from the northwestern edge of Baxter State Park (in the lower right corner) to the Canadian border. The map of this region featuring the Allagash and St. John rivers is on one side. Elevation contours are emphasized with shaded relief, though the latter is not particularly well-done. The map is primarily intended for canoe trips on the rivers, but gives plenty of detail for other recreationalists in the region. Major, minor, and temporary forest roads are distinguished (and most of them are privately owned, and access permits may be required). The map also shows customs stations, forest gatehouses, warden/ranger stations, lookout towers, maintained and primitive campsites, gates of chains, obstructions such as missing bridges and other road blockages, landing strips, and points of interest.
The reverse side is entirely devoted to a guide to the rivers, with separate sections describig the St. John trip and the Allagash trip. Other sections give safety information, or describe wet weather fire-building tips, access highlights, international river classification, history of the waterways, Indian names, wildlife, and fishing.
Scale, about 1:145,725 (1 inch = about 2.3 miles). Contour interval = 100 feet. Size: about 24 x 36 inches. Folded. Plastic.

The Complete Map of Mt. Katahdin and Baxter State ParkBy Jim Witherell, registered Maine Guide
Detailed topographic map, printed on two sides, is based on USGS topographic quadrangles. On one side is the south end of the park at large scale (more detailed) showing Mt. Katahdin itself and the more readily accessible areas. The mapmaker has enhanced some of the key symbols on the USGS base maps to make them more visible, such as the roads, trails, campgrounds, etc. The Appalachian Trail is given a special tint. The trails are each rated into four different classes of difficulty, explained in a "Hiking Tips" box, which also lists recommended equipment, temperature, trail blazes, and park seasons. (The cover mistakenly refers to this large scale map as a "7.5 minute map"—when it really meant to say that it is the same scale as the 7.5 minute series, i.e. 1:24,000. "7.5 minutes" refers to the degrees of latitude and longitude covered by a map, not, strictly speaking, the scale. The map described here covers much more than 7.5 minutes!)
The reverse side shows all of the rest of the park, at smaller scale, also based on USGS maps. (These map are, in fact, essentially reprints of USGS 7.5' quads pieced together and slightly modified for easier reading, updating, and a few other useful changes. The modifications have an amateurish look to them, but appear to be carefully made.) There is also a list of trails with mileages, park "Tote Road" mileages per section, a list of outlying campsites and their capacity, and some of the park's rules.
Scale of south end of park map, 1:24,000 (1 inch = 2000 feet = about 0.38 mile); scale of north end map, 1:38,000 (1 inch = about 0.6 mile). Contour interval: 20 feet. Size: about 36 x 24 inches. Folded. Paper.

DeLorme's Map & Guide of Moosehead Lake Detailed topographic map printed on two sides shows the region around Moosehead Lake in west-central Maine. The map is on one side of the sheet, and is dominated by the big lake itself. Depth contours and soundings give an idea of the underwater terrain. Also shows boat launch sites and buoys (though the maps "is not intended as a primary water navigation chart." Elevation contours which appear to be derived from accurate USGS maps show the topography; subtle relief shading helps emphasize the contours. The map also shows roads of all classes, trails, gates, ski trails, ski areas, maintained and primitive campsites, and more.About two-thirds of the back side of the sheet is a guide to the area, with text on history, fishing, camping, hunting, hiking, canoeing, skiing and snowmobiling. A pair of inset maps show street details of Rockwood and Greenville. The remainder of the sheet is given to promotional descriptions of DeLorme's other fine products.
Scale, 1:63,360 (1 inch = 1 mile). Contour interval = 20 feet. Size: about 23½ x 36 inches. Folded. Plastic.
