DeLorme, The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer
This is the 30th edition of the first in DeLorme’s series of state atlases, from their own home state.  Unlike the rest of the series, which have seen changes in the style of the covers (made more eye-catching) and the maps themselves (which have added striking shaded relief as mapping technology improves), DeLorme has stuck with the original cover design with this one.  And though the maps are as detailed as ever, they have not been improved—they do not feature shaded relief.  I wonder if they feel constrained by their constituency of Down-Easters, who may like the atlas just the way it is?

At any rate, for those unaware of the format, the book consists of 78 map pages.  Seventy of these pages are sectional state maps, showing specific areas in much greater detail than can be had on any statewide road map.  The other eight pages show detailed street maps of important Maine cities and towns (and are accompanied by separate street indices).  The state map pages show roads of all sizes—including dirt roads—and trails, ferry lines, railroads, elevation contours, orchards and woodlands, airports, lookout towers, gates, picnic areas, hospitals, boat launch sites, campsites, and more.  Place names are indexed.  Adjacent states and provinces are shown in much less detail than the lands of Maine.

The gazetteer consists of 13 pages which give short descriptions of, or which chart the amenities of these features (which are also located on the map pages):  Sand beaches of the coast, nature preserves with foot trails, parks and recreation areas, state fish hatcheries and wildlife management areas, hiking trails, unique natural areas, scenic waterfalls, canoe trips (includes illustrations of basic canoe strokes!), historic lighthouses, airports and airfields, historic forts, campgrounds, museums and historic sites, downhill and cross-country skiing, and a mileage chart.

Scale of atlas maps, 1:126,720 (1 inch = 2 miles).  Contour interval: 80 feet.
Published by DeLorme, 2007 (29th edition).  96 pages, about 11 x 15½ inches.  Paperback book.  New.

DeLorme, The Maine Map and Guide
This may be my favorite state road map.  It is beautifully designed and packed with information for the traveler.  The full state is shown on one side with mountains and hills depicted in shaded relief.  Symbols show boat launches, city offices, covered bridges, historic sites, hospitals, information centers, lighthouses, rest areas, art & craft galleries, private campgrounds, golf courses, museums, specialty stores, theaters, and much more (many of them private).  Distances between points on roads are shown in miles.  Insets show not just the major streets of just a few cities, but plans of the major streets of no less than 29 town areas.  A full-color decorative border depicts the wildlife and plant life of the state.  See sample at right.

The reverse side has a town-to-town mileage chart; paragraphs on selected inns, resorts, cottages, restaurants, sporting camps, cruises, and other features; and a chart listing hundreds of campgrounds showing facilities at each.  The towns are fully indexed.

Scale, 1:600,000 (1 inch = about 9.5 miles).  Size: About 24 x 36 inches.  Folded.  Paper.

American Map/Arrow, Maine Street Atlas
With coverage of 133 cities and towns, this detailed atlas shows streets that you won't find in DeLorme's Maine Atlas & Gazetteer.  If your "Maine" interest is streets within towns and not rural roads connecting them, this will be more useful to you than the DeLorme atlas—and at a lower price, too.  The maps are not as colorful as the DeLorme and most street maps are today, and use only two colors, but they are clear nevertheless.  Besides complete or near complete coverage of streets, the maps show schools, colleges and universities, government buildings, post offices, hospitals, shopping centers, and golf courses.  Streets are fully indexed in the back, with each city or town listed separately.  Includes a one page road map of the full state and its neighbors which shows major and secondary highways.

Scale of street maps varies.
Published by American Map Corporation, Arrow Map division, 2000.  118 pages.  About 9 x 12 inches.  Paperback book.  New.
Item #AMC-ME-STR-ATL.  Shipping weight: 1.2 lbs.  Publisher's price: $12.95.  Your price: $11.65   (out of stock)

DeLorme, Street Map: Bangor, Brewer
Detailed road and street map printed on two sides.  On one side is the comprehensive street map of Bangor and Brewer, with insets showing streets of Old Town, Milford, Orono, and Veazie.  Though printed in three colors only, the maps clearly distinguish freeways and highways from local streets.  Parks, colleges, schools, libraries and other public buildings.  Streets are fully indexed.

On the reverse side is a regional road map of the area, showing the major roads of about 15 adjacent towns.  Also shows lakes and ponds, boat launches, rest areas, railroads, and gates.

Scale of Bangor-Brewer street map, about 1:19,000 (1 inch = about 0.3 mile); scale of regional map, about 1:79,200 (1 inch = about 1.25 inches).  Size: about 24 x 18 inches.  Folded.  Paper.

DeLorme, Street Map: Greater Portland
Comprehensive street coverage of the Portland, Maine region, printed on two sides, covers all of Portland, South Portland, Falmouth, Cumberland, Yarmouth, Long Island, and Westrbrook; and most or much of Gorham, Windham, Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, Gray, North Yarmouth, and Freeport.  On one side is the coastal region, on the reverse is the inland portion, plus a comprehensive street index.  An inset shows central Portland in more detail.

Various classes of streets and roads are clearly distinguished.  The map also shows railroads, ferry routes, county and township boundaries, airports, parks and recreation areas, wetlands, wooded areas, attractions, beaches, boat access, campgrounds, colleges or universities, cross-country skiing, schools, entertainment and sports facilities, golf courses, government buildings, historic sites, hospitals, information centers, libraries, lighthouses, marinas, points of interest, park & rides, parking areas, and more.

DeLorme's Map & Guide of the Sebago Lake Region
Detailed road and recreation map of the Sebago Lake region in southern Maine.  The big lake dominates the map, and depth contours and soundings are shown. Also shows swimming areas, boat ramps, shoals, rocks, and buoys (though boaters note that the map "is not intended as a primary water navigation chart").  Other lakes and ponds shown in the region include Raymond Pond, Crescent Lake, Coffee Pond, Brandy Pond, Trickey Pond, Panther Pond, and most of Little Sebago Lake.

The topography of the land area is indicated with shaded relief.  Highways and local roads are clearly distinguished, and numbered or named.  Sebago Lake State Park, occupying a small area on the north shore, is readily distinguished.

On the reverse side is a guide to the region, which also includes several historical photos to illustrate the "historical tour of the region."  Another section describes fishing opportunities, and another gives basic facts about each of the towns on the map, which are Casco, Frye Island, Gorham, Gray, Naples, Raymond, Sebago, Standish, and Windham.  An index to streets is provided.  The remaining space (about a third of the back side) is given to advertising many other fine DeLorme publications.

Scale, about 1:34,214 (1 inch = about 0.54 mile).  Size: about 24 x 34 inches.  Folded.  Plastic.
