DeLorme Iowa Atlas & Gazetteer
This atlas depicts the entire state on 51 pages of topographic maps.  The maps use shaded relief to enhance the elevation contours and show the form of the land.  Shows creeks, rivers, lakes, and ponds, with woodlands indicated by a green tint.  Depicts roads of all classes, including local and county roads; also shows railroads (active and abandoned) and powerlines.  Other features mapped include county boundaries, military and Indian reservations, airports, dams, points of interest, hospitals, information centers, boat ramps, and public campgrounds.

There are additional map features shown which are described in more detail in the Gazetteer portion of the book.  These include Attractions, Biking, Campgrounds, Canoe Trips, Covered Bridges, Fishing, Hiking, Historic Sites, Hunting, National Lands, Scenic Drives, State Lands, State Preserves, Unique Natural Features, and Wildlife Viewing.  The Gazetteer section gives seven pages of tables and short paragraphs describing these categories in Iowa.  There is also a five-page index which helps you locate the place names and map features in the atlas.

Scale, 1:200,000 (1 inch = about 3.2 miles).

Rand McNally Streets of Des Moines and Ames, Iowa
Good basic street map printed on two sides.  On one side is the main map showing Des Moines and its suburbs.  Coverage includes most of Grimes, all of Urbandale, Clive, and West Des Moines; most of Johnston; all of Windsor Heights; most of Altoona and Pleasant Hill, and most of Carlisle.  An inset shows Central Des Moines in detail.

On the reverse side is a continuation of the suburb map to the north, showing most of Ankeny.  In addition, there is a separate street map of Ames, which is about 20 miles north of the other map coverage.  Another inset map shows the main roads of the entire Des Moines & Vicinity region.  The remainder of this side is dominated by the comprehensive index to streets, schools, and other features.

The street maps clearly distinguish freeways, major throughways, and local streets, and also show railroads, cemetaries, parks, points of interest, airports, colleges and universities, schools, hospitals, post offices, museums, shopping centers, city halls, libraries, police and fire stations, golf courses, swimming, and block numbers.  The maps are marked with a latitude-longitude grid for GPS-users.  As appears to be the norm for the newest Rand McNally street maps, some streets (I'd guess less than 2%) are not labelled.

Scale, about 1:34,850 (1 inch = about 0.55 mile).  Size: about 39½ x 28 inches.  Folded.  Paper.
