Map emphasizing geophysical features.  While major cities are labeled and national boundaries are shown, the countries are not labeled.  Shaded relief emphasizes the mountains, while land elevations and ocean depths are depicted with distinct colors.  Major peaks are indicated with elevations in meters.  Uses the "Batholomew modified Gall's stereographic projection" centered on the prime meridian (i.e. on England and west Africa).  Printed on one side only.  See sample at right.

ODT What's Up? South!  World Map (folded)
This new south-at-top map is a great educational tool.  As the publisher rightly notes, the convention of having north upwards on a map is just that, a convention with no logical basis.  True "up" from the standpoint of we on the earth itself  is away from the center, and the earth in space has no inherent up or down.  To emphasize this point, this map includes an inset which shows six global views from various angles.  In addition, other inset maps show examples of other projections with notes on their merits and limitations.

The main map is a Van der Grinten projection, which is a fair compromise between preservation of actual shapes, with less distortion of relative sizes than the Mercator projection.  It is fairly detailed and shows major cities, railways, rivers, peaks (with elevations in meters), and ocean depths (also shown in meters), and each nation is clearly distinguished with color tints.  Mountainous regions are indicated with shaded relief.  

For the scale of the map, the size of the print is larger than most other world maps, a feature which makes the labels easier to read.  Clocks across the top show the world's approximate time zones.  Because it omits the Antarctic region, the map shows the Equator top of center.

Hema World Pocket Map
Detailed political map, printed on one side only.  This map is "Pacific Centred" (on the western Pacific, Sydney, Australia to be precise).  Emphasizes political boundaries with adjacent nations tinted in distinct colors, shows major cities, roads, railways, airports, and seaports.  Color tints distinguish five different depth levels in the oceans.  Although time zone boundaries are not shown, clocks illustrated at the top of the map give you the general idea of the time in each longitude.  At top is an image of the full, unfolded map; at left the cover; at right a sample.

A convenient size for world travelers or for quick reference for the office or school.  Employs the Bartholomew modified Gall's stereographic projection centered on 150 degrees.  Latitue and longitude lines are provided at 15 degree intervals.

Rand McNally World Wall Map M Series, folded
Colorful, up-to-date, and economical political wall map of the world, centered on Africa and Europe, and printed on one side only.  Although emphasizing the boundaries of countries with vivid contrasting colors, shaded relief shows the form of the terrain as well.  Details include rivers, major mountain peaks, important cities, and major highways.  Uses the Gall Stereographic Projection, which is a fair compromise between distortion of relative size versus preservation of shape.  The Equator is shown slightly below center.  Does not show ocean depths or ocean floor topography.  This is the folded version of the same map shown on the Political World Wall Maps page, but unlike the rolled version, it can be mailed at the lower First Class rate upon request.
