Nelles Indonesia travel map
Excellent travel map, with detailed shaded-relief to depict the mountains, green tinting to show the lowlands.  (See sample at right.)  The map is printed on two sides, with the western side of the island chains on one side, the eastern on the reverse.  There is a generous amount of overlap on each map.  Insets show much more detailed maps of Central Java, North Sumatra, Bali, Lombok, South Sulawesi, and "Around Rantepao".  The map also shows almost all of Malaysia.  This edition shows the location of the epicenter of the December 26, 2004 earthquake and tsunami, and notes that the details on the map do not reflect the aftermath of the devastation in the Aceh region.

Distances between road junctions are indicated in kilometers, locations of particular interest to visitors are marked with symbols.  The legend explains symbols in English, German, and French.

Scale of main map, 1: 4,500,000 (1 inch = about 71 miles).  Size:  About 31 x 19½ inches.  Folded, with card cover.

Nelles Sumatra travel map
Excellent detailed travel map printed on two sides, of Indonesia’s westernmost large island.  One side shows the north half of the island (plus large portions of nearby Malaysia), the reverse side shows the south half (plus westernmost Java).  In typical Nelles style, the mountainous terrain is revealed with the use of intricate shaded relief, and the lowlands are accented with a green tint.  The maps show roads of all classes (with distances between point on major roads show in kilometers), railways, ferries, airports, parks, beaches, ancient sites, and other places of interest.  Insets show street maps of the central areas of the cities of Medan, Padang, and Palembang.  The legend explains symbols in English, German, and French.

Scale, 1:1,500,000 (1 inch = about 23.7 miles).  Size: about 31 x 19½ inches.  Folded.  Paper with card cover.
