DeLorme Illinois Atlas & Gazetteer
Comprehensive road atlas of the entire state emphasizes recreational features, but is useful for anyone who needs the detail provided by 81 pages of topo maps.  The maps show all classes of highways and roadways, including local ones, which latter are usually labeled when not in urban or residential areas.  They also show county and township boundaries, airports and landing strips, railroads, abandoned railroads, powerlines, pipelines, woodlands, orchards, lakes and ponds, swamps, quarries, mine shafts, sand or gravel pits, public campgrounds, public lands, windmills, and more.  Elevation contours are depicted at about 30-foot intervals.

The Gazetteer section contains tables or descriptions keyed to sites relevant to these topics: Boat Launch Sites, Campgrounds, Canoe Trips, Fishing, Fishing Hot Spots, Historic Sites, Hunting, Museums, Parks/Forests/Recreation Areas, Scenic Drives, Trails, Unique Natural Features, and Wildlife.

Rand McNally Illinois State Map
Large, detailed road map printed on two sides.  One side shows the map of the whole state, with significant portions of adjacent states also mapped (though in less detail).  The maps clearly distinguish major, secondary, and local roads, with point-to-point mileages indicated for all but the local roads.  Also distinguishes toll roads and scenic routes, and shows county boundaries and names.  Other features mapped include state and national parks and forests, campgrounds, wayside or roadside parks, rest areas, military reservations, airports, information centers, service areas, and more.   A comprehensive index helps you find the cities and towns on the map, and also lists their populations.  On one side of the map is a feature describing historic canals of Illinois.

On the reverse side is a travel guide to the state which features information about places to visit and ten detail maps showing the major roads of Bloomington, Chicago and Vicinity, Champaign/Urbana, Decatur, Peoria, Quad Cities (Rock Island and Moline in Illinois, plus Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa), Rockford, Springfield, St. Louis region, and including a detailed street map of Downtown Chicago.  A mileage chart enables you to easily calculate distances between major cities of the state, another lists the facilities and activities available in Illinois State Park & Recreation Areas.  Another chart shows average high and low monthly temperatures and days with precipitation for Carbondale, Chicago, and Springfield.

Detailed street map printed on two sides covers almost all of Chicago, but leaves out a small portion of the city in the extreme north and likewise in the south.  Many neighboring towns are covered, including all of Rosemont, Norridge, Harwood Heights, Schiller Park, Elmwood Park, River Grove, Oak Park, River Forest, Maywood, Broadview, Forest Park, La Grange Park, La Grange, Riverside, Berwyn, Cicero, Stickney, Brookfield, Lyons, Forest View, McCook, Hodgkins, Countryside, Summit, Bedford Park, Justice, Bridgeview, Burbank, Hickory Hills, and Hometown.  It covers the area as far east as Chicago-O'Hare International Airport.
