Great Sand Dunes National Park
(Great Sand Dunes National Monument and Preserve will be renamed Great Sand Dunes National Park once the purchase of adjacent lands is finalized.)

National Geographic / Trails Illustrated Sangre de Cristo Mountains; Great Sand Dunes National Monument & Preserve, Colorado, USA
Beautiful new topographic contour map printed on two sides.  This map uses National Geographic's greatly improved style for their newest maps, which uses shaded relief to emphasize the topography, and well-selected colors which clearly show land ownership.  One side shows the north part of the region, going as far north as the town of Salida, and recreation sites along US highway 50, and as far east as the towns of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff, and Colorado highway 69.  The reverse side covers the southern part of the Sangre de Cristo Range.  Additional areas shown on the maps include the Bureau of Land Management's Blanca Wetlands, San Luis Lake State Park, San Luis Lakes Wildlife Area, The Nature Conservancy's Medana and Zapata ranches, Huerfano State Wildlife Area, and DeWeese Reservoir State Wildlife Area.

The maps detail roads of all classes, trails, ranger stations, trailheads, restrooms, parking areas, campgrounds, wildlife viewing areas, and much more.  Color tints show forests, private property, and state use land.

Sky Terrain Sangre de Cristo Wilderness; Great Sand Dunes National Park (2nd Edition)
Excellent topographic contour map, printed on two sides.  One side shows much of the northern part of the Sangre de Cristo Range, including Mount Adams, Horn Peak, Rito Alto Peak, Electric Peak, and Hayden Pass.  This area is managed by the US Forest Service within San Isabel National Forest and Rio Grande National Forest, and includes Sangre de Cristo Wilderness (as are the US Forest Service lands on the reverse).  The reverse side shows the adjacent southern part of the Sangre de Cristo Range and almost all of Great San Dunes National Park.  Other features on this side are Crestone Peaks and Blanca Peak.

Maps on both sides are enhanced with shaded relief which vividly shows the form of the terrain.  Topographic contours are further emphasized with color tint gradients to show relative heights at a glance.  Trails are clearly marked and given difficulty ratings, access and other area roads are distinctly depicted.  Also shows campgrounds, backcountry camps, trailheads, skiing, information centers, and much more.

Most of the remaining space is devoted to detailed descriptions of numerous trails on the map, which include mileages, elevation gains, and Forest Service numerical designation.

The main advantages of this map over the National Geographic / Trails Illustrated map is that it is a larger scale and more detailed, its trail disatnce and difficulty table, trails have probably received more field checking, and it costs less.  The main advantages of the Trails Illustrated are that it covers a larger area, and that it is easier to see the boundaries of the various administrative areas.

Scale, 1:60,000 (1 inch = about 0.95 mile).  Contour interval = 100 feet.  Size: about 24 x 39½ inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

Sky Terrain Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak, 75k Trail & Recreation Map, 2nd Edition
Excellent detailed topographic map, printed on two sides.  One side shows the shaded relief contour map of the title region.  Specifically, this includes parts of Pike National Forest, Mueller State Park, Cheyenne Mountain State Park, Fox Run Regional Park, Palmer Park, Garden of the Gods, and the U.S. Air Force Academy.  Cities and towns covered are Cripple Creek, Victor, Woodland Park, Palmer Lake, and Monument.  Trails and dirt roads clearly depicted, paved regional and access roads brightly colored.  Also shows campgrounds, ski areas, mountain biking, and much more.

The reverse side is packed with information.  It includes notes on recent changes in trail access, a camping chart, public agency contact numbers, climate, geology, and especially an extensive annotated list of trails.  Garden of the Gods, a city park shown on the front of the map, is portrayed in detail here at 1:15,000, with topographic contours and trails (but no shaded relief).  Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, which is just a trifle too far west to be included on the main map, is shown on the reverse at the same scale as the main map.  A description of the fossils discovered there accompanies the topographic mini-map.  Another useful feature is the “Bird’s Eye View” of the Pikes Peak Region, a perspective view of the physical terrain which will help those who are less adept at interpreting contour maps understand the landforms.
