Colorado Maps & Atlases
Benchmark Maps Colorado Road & Recreation AtlasThe latest addition to Benchmark's series of outstanding western state atlases, this new Colorado atlas also features two main map sections. The recreation section divides the state into 13 maps (with less detail for the eastern plains), each of which employ detailed shaded relief to reveal the form of the land, and use color tints to distinguish land management (yellow for BLM, green for National Forest, violet for National Parks and Monuments, blue for state lands). On a facing page for each map, is a recreation guide, which lists recreation areas by categories, gives a brief description, provides contact information, and keys the place to the map. A small climate graph gives monthly temperature and precipitation high and low averages for one locality on the map page.
The largest section features 91 landscape maps which show the state in more detail. These maps also employ shaded relief to give the mountains depth, but instead of tinting according to land management, as in the recreation section, these use color tints to distinguish different elevation levels. The road system is shown in great detail, with highways numbered, some local roads named, even many dirt Forest Service roads numbered. Benchmark field-checks the roads in their atlases, and though it is not practical to visit them all, their depictions can be expected to be more reliable than other maps.
In addition to the two main sections, there are additional maps in this publication: There is a two-page spread showing the major highways of the 48 contiguous states; another two-page spread extending from San Francisco to Dallas, and Rapid City south to Nogales and El Paso; a third two-page spread of the full state; and four additional pages of detail maps of 1) the Boulder-Broomfield region, 2) the Metropolitan Denver region, and 3) the Colorado Springs region. The index is subdivided into Counties & County Seats; Cities, Towns, & Locales; Mountain Passes; Mountain Ranges, Peaks, & Other Physical Features; Lakes, Rivers, & Other Drainage Features; and several smaller subdivisions.
Scale of landscape maps, 1:200,000 (1 inch = about 3.2 miles). Scale of recreation maps is 1:500,000 (1 inch = about 7.9 miles).

GTR Topographic Recreational Map of ColoradoDetailed travel map printed on two sides showing more than 800 recreation sites, with 700 points of interest listed. The map is on one side, and includes interstates with exit numbers, highways and secondary roads, color shaded topography, campgrounds, rest areas, ski areas, lakes and boating, state game and fish areas, and much more. This color tinting in combination with the tints used for showing parks and forests can make things look a little busy, but despite that drawback, the publication packs a lot of information in a small area.
The reverse side includes an index to cities and towns plus scads of tables and lists on national parks, wildlife refuges, state parks, state wildlife areas, ski areas, 14,000 foot mountain peaks, wilderness areas, recreation sites, points of interest, and more.
