Benchmark Maps California Road & Recreation Atlas
Benchmark's atlases include two major types of maps.  In the California edition, recreation areas are emphasized on smaller scale maps, with details of each recreation area on the facing page, plus charts on climate for key areas.  Most of the atlas is devoted to very detailed landscape maps, with outstanding shaded relief and elevations shown by color coding.  The roads on these maps are actually field-checked, which enables you to distinguish between usable backcountry roads from those which are behind locked gates (and also shown).  The maps also include a lat./long. grid for GPS users.

As a bonus, the atlas also includes a two-page landscape map of the US with the interstate system and other major highways, and another two-page spread of the western United States.

Scale: Recreation Maps, 1:862,905 (1 inch = about 14 miles); Landscape Maps, 1:300,000 (1 inch = about 4.7 miles)
Benchmark Maps, 2007 (fifth edition, revised).  143 pages, about 11 x 15 inches, paperback book. New.

The Thomas Guide California Road Atlas, 23rd Edition
Including Portions of Nevada
Fat, detailed atlas includes three types of maps:
1) Highway maps which cover the entire state, plus the more populated areas of Nevada (i.e. the Reno-Tahoe and Las Vegas regions), plus adjacent portions of Oregon, Arizona, and northwestern Mexico.
2) Metro maps which include more local roads in and around selected urban areas.
And 3) Detail maps which give street detail for over 50 cities.

A two-page full-state index map is provided which shows you the areas covered by the highway and metro maps, plus a listing of the cities covered by the detail maps.

The highway maps show all of the typical detail you would expect from a good state road map—interstates, US, and state highways, minor roads, National Parks, Monuments, Forests, and Preserves; State Parks and Recreation Areas, campgrounds, rest areas, airports, military bases, places of interest—plus many more local roads that you could not fit at the smaller scale of a state road map.

The metro area maps improve on the detail all the more, and include many areas that can hardly be called metropolitan for they surround small towns that can hardly be called urban—in addition to covering the regions you would expect, such as the San Francisco, Sacramento, and Los Angeles metro areas.

The detail maps give comprehensive street detail for the 50+ selected cities included, but don't expect them to be complete.  For example, the two detail maps of San Francisco cover the northern two-thirds of the city, but not the rest.  There are eight detail maps which show a portion of Los Angeles, but the majority of that city is not included in the same detail.  Apparently, the detail maps are selected pages of the more specific Thomas Guide published for that area.  But since the areas selected for inclusion in detail are by and large the ones most of interest to the pleasure traveler, they are quite useful, and certainly give you more city detail than in either the DeLorme or Benchmark atlases described above.  A comprehensive index is included, as well as some useful quick-reference indices in the introductory pages.

Published by Thomas Bros. Maps (a division of Rand McNally), USA, 2006, 23rd Edition.  About 325 pages; about 9 x 11 inches, spiral-bound paperback book.  New.

MapArt California road map
Outstanding road map of California is printed on two sides, and is more detailed than most full-state road maps.  The north half of the state is on one side, the south half on the reverse.  Uses shaded relief to show the form of the land.  Interstates, major and secondary highways are readily distinguished.  The minor roads on the map are a weak point: It doesn't distinguish between paved rural roads and many that are dirt, with some of these impassable even with four-wheel drive.  So for these minor "white" roads, the only ones to plan on using are the ones which are numbered.   Point to point mileages are provided along major and many secondary roads.  Shows National Forests, National Parks, Preserves and Monuments, Wildlife Refuges, State Parks and Forests, and Military Reservations.  Also shows airports, roadside rests, campgrounds, and more.
Insets show major highways and roads of Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area, San Diego, Los Angeles and vicinity, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Scale of main map, 1:800,000 (1 inch = 12.6 miles).  Size: about 39 x 27 inches.  Folded.  Paper.

AAA Northern California road map (Sectional Series)
Excellent road map of northern California gives far more detail than typical full-state maps, and is especially good for those who want to travel over the back roads.  The sheet is printed on two sides; the main map is printed on one side, and extends from the Oregon border (and indeed includes about 25 miles of southern Oregon) south to Fort Bragg, Willits, Willows, Oroville, and Reno.  (The map extends east about 70 miles into Nevada.)  Interstates, major and secondary highways, and minor roads are readily distinguished.  Point to point mileages are provided along major and some secondary roads.  Shows Indian Reservations, National Forests, National Parks and Monuments, Wildlife Refuges, Wilderness Areas, State Parks and Forests, and Military Reservations.  Also shows airports, roadside rests, ranger stations, government campgrounds, ski areas, and more.  A small mileage chart helps you calculate the distances between fourteen regional cities.
On the reverse side are great detail maps of several parks and recreation areas, each of which uses shaded relief to show the form of the mountains.  In addition to the kind of road and other details shown on the main map, these maps also show trails—at a scale large enough to be useful as a trail map!  The areas covered are Lake Oroville State Recreation Area and Vicinity; Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area; Humboldt Redwoods State Park (a map which extends south to Richardson Grove State Park and which shows a large part of King Range National Conservation Area); Lassen Volcanic National Park; and Lava Beds National Monument.  An index is provided, covering the main map and the detail maps as well.

AAA Central California: Bay Area to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, road map (Sectional Series)
Excellent road map of "central" California gives far more detail than typical full-state maps, and is especially good for those who want to travel over the back roads.  (Though the title says "central", at least two-thirds of the map covers areas which would generally be considered part of northern California.)  The sheet is printed on two sides; the main map is printed on one side, and extends from Fort Bragg, Willits, Willows, Oroville, and Reno; south to the Monterey Peninsula, Mendota, Fresno, Kings Canyon National Park, and Whitney Portal.  (The map extends east up to 100 miles into Nevada.)  Interstates, major and secondary highways, and minor roads are readily distinguished. A small mileage chart helps you calculate the distances between important regional cities.
On the reverse side are three great detail maps of parks and recreation areas, each of which uses shaded relief to show the form of the mountains.  In addition to the kind of road and other details shown on the main map, these maps also show trails—at a scale large enough to be useful as a trail map!  The areas covered are Yosemite Valley; Lake Tahoe; and Point Reyes and Marin County.  An index is provided, covering the main map and the detail maps as well.

AAA Central Coast Region and Kern County, road map (Regional Series)
Excellent road map gives far more detail than typical full-state maps, and is especially good for those who want to travel over the back roads.  The sheet is printed on two sides; on one side the map covers the coastal region from San Simeon and Hearst Castle south to Venture, and extends inland to Paso Robles, McFarland, and Woody in the Sierra Nevada Foothills.  South along the eastern boundary of the map is the Bakersfield region, Lebec, Piru, and Simi Valley.  Other places covered on the map include Morro Bay, Atascadero, San Luis Obispo, Grover Beach, Santa Maria, Lompoc, Goleta, Santa Barbara, Vandenberg Air Force, Carrizo Plain National Monument, and the southern San Joaquin Valley.  An inset extends the coastal coverage south to Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, and Point Mugu.
On the reverse side is an eastward extension of the main map showing the southern Sierra Nevada, western Mojave Desert, and part of the Tehachapi Mountains.  Within this region is Lake Isabella, Tehachapi, Rosamond, Edwards, Mojave, California City, Red Rock Canyon State Park, Ridgecrest, and Boron.

Interstates, major and secondary highways, and minor roads are readily distinguished.  Point to point mileages are provided along major and most secondary roads, to the nearest tenth.  Shows National Forests, National Monuments, Wilderness Areas, State Parks, and Military Reservations.  Also shows airports, roadside rests, ranger stations, government campgrounds, ski areas, and more.  A detailed index helps you find the hundreds of cities, towns, roads, and recreation areas on the map.

AAA Southern California, road map (Sectional Series)
Excellent road map of southern California gives far more detail than typical full-state maps, and is especially good for those who want to travel over the back roads.  The sheet is printed on two sides; the main map is printed on one side, and extends from Bakersfield and Ventura, and Mojave National Preserve south to the Mexican border.  (The map extends south a few miles into Mexico and east up to 35 miles into Arizona.)
The map is a part of the same Sectional Series as the three described above; there is a gap between the "Central California" map and this one, so you also need the Central Coast Region to cover the gap.

Interstates, major and secondary highways, and minor roads are readily distinguished. A small mileage chart helps you calculate the distances between important regional cities.

On the reverse side is a detailed map of Metropolitan Los Angeles.  It covers all of LA and the surrounding area ranging from Point Mugu State Park and Moorpark in the west to San Clemente in the south, and and San Bernardino and Temecula in the east.  It also covers the San Gabriel Mountains.  Shows the same kind of detail shown on the main map, so shows the freeway system plus major streets and avenues.

Scale of main map, 1:570,240 (1 inch = 9 miles); scale of metro Los Angeles map, 1:196,416 (1 inch = 3.1 miles).  Size: about 35½ x 24 inches.  Folded.  Paper.

National Geographic Southern California GuideMap
Durable laminated map and guide printed on two sides.  On one side is the map of the southern and central parts of the state, ranging from San Francisco and Yosemite Valley south.  Because this map is as detailed as larger maps, the print is quite small.  Roads of all classes are clearly distinguished, and point to point mileages are indicated along major roads.  Shaded relief is used to show the location of mountainous regions.  Color tints show the location of National Parks, Monuments, Recreation Areas, Wildlife Refuges, and Forests, Indian Reservations, and Military Reservations.  Also shows public campgrounds, points of interest, visitor information centers, airports, and ski areas.

Insets show the major roads of the Monterey Bay Area, Fresno, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, Oxnard-Ventura, San Diego, and with an especially large inset detailing the Los Angeles Area.  A climate chart gives monthly temperature and "days with precipitation" averages for Bakersfield, Los Angeles, and San Diego.  An index helps you locate the numerous cities and towns on the map and also lists their populations.

On the reverse side is a travel guide which describes points of interest in short paragraphs which show the influence of National Geographic's quality writing.  There are also several additional maps: street detail of downtown Los Angeles and downtown San Diego, and a detail of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.  The descriptions are enhanced by excellent color photos of sights throughout the state.  You also get a chart of Park Service sites in the state which indicates the facilities and activities of each.  Finally, there is a calendar of major annual events and contact information.

Scale of main map, about 1:2,000,000 (1 inch = about 31.5 miles).  Size: about 18 x 24½ inches.  Folded.  Laminated.

GPR Oregon Coast: Recreation Finder Map & Guide
From California's Redwoods to Long Beach, WA
This publication, printed on two sides, not only covers the entire coastal region of Oregon, but also extends southward into California and shows much of the Redwood Region.  In the latter area, it includes most of Redwood National Park, the Headwaters Forest, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and King Range National Conservation Area (including the Lost Coast).  Rather than one big map, this is a series of strip maps plus detail maps of 17 cities.

The maps use color tints to show major elevation levels and show roads and recreational features in much more detail than your average state road map.  Features covered include colleges and universities, airports, boat ramps or landings, canoe or kayak routes, cemetaries, fishing areas or hatcheries, gates, golf courses, government offices, historic areas, hospitals, lighthouses, lookouts, marina or docks, point-to-point mileages, Oregon Coast Bike Route, Oregon Coast Trail, parks (with or woithout picnicking and campsites), police or sheriff stations, public schools, shopping centers, trailheads, viewpoints, visitor centers, whale watching areas, wildlife viewing, wineries and more.  The features located are fully indexed, plus there is a great deal of visitor information provided.

Scale of main strip maps, slightly variable, about 1:222,000 (1 inch = about 3.5 miles).  Size: about 35½  x 26½ inches.  Folded.  Glossy paper.

AAA Southern Nevada; Death Valley, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks
Though not apparent by the title, this map includes more California territory than Nevada.  It is printed on two sides, and one side shows the region in much more detail than can be seen on a statewide road map.  The area covered includes the southeastern San Joaquin Valley of California (as far west as Bakersfield and Visalia), Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, the White Mountains, Death Valley National Park, Barstow, Mojave National Preserve, Las Vegas, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and Kingman, Arizona.  Covers federal and state highways (with point-to-point distances along the most important roads given in miles), county roads, railroads, airports, National Parks, Recreation Areas, Monuments, Preserves, and Forests, federal Wilderness Areas, military reservations, Indian Reservations, campgrounds, ski areas, and more.

The reverse side features larger scale detail maps of Death Valley National Park, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, and Lake Mead National Recreation Area.  These maps are much the same as the main maps, but show even more—including picnic areas and trails (though you wouldn't want to use them as trail maps).  These detail maps also feature shaded relief to show the form of the mountains.  The communities in California, Nevada, and Arizona shown on the map are separately indexed.

Scale of main map, about 1:570,240 (1 inch = about 9 miles); scale of detail maps, about 1:253,440 (1 inch = about 4 miles) and about 1:380,160 (1 inch = about 6 miles).  Size: about 35½ x 24 inches.  Folded.  Paper.

Imus Geographics Sierra Nevada topo map
Excellent newly published map, printed on one side only, shows the entire Sierra Nevada plus generous portions of adjacent areas of California and Nevada.  The coverage, in fact, extends from Mt. Lassen in the northwest corner, Buena Vista Valley (in northern Nevada) in the northeast, Tehachapi Pass and California City in the southeast corner, and over to the coast at Pismo Beach in the southwest.  The map thus includes all of the San Joaquin Valley, and Owens Valley to the east, too.

Eye-catching shaded relief and naturalistic colors, in combination with fine detail, vividly portray the Snowy Range and doubles as a road map and guide to the numerous parks and recreation areas of the region.  (See sample at right.)  At this scale, the map shows many more local roads than are typically found on a state road map, and it even shows many major trails (though you wouldn't want to use it as a hiking map, this feature does alert you to trail hiking possibilities in the various areas).
