Richmond, Virginia regional raised relief map

Hubbard Scientific Richmond, Virginia regional raised relief map
This three-dimensional vinyl map shows a section of eastern Virginia, plus a small part of southern Maryland (mostly water) in the upper right corner.  This coastal region is so flat (little more than 400 feet elevation difference between the highest point and sea level), that there is little to be gained with a raised relief map—except that it does show an important part of the state's geography, and if you are making a mosaic of the adjoining relief maps, it is better to use this one than a paper alternative.  The title city of Richmond is at center left, Chesapeake Bay dominates the right side, and much of Newport News is at lower right.

Maps in this series show elevation contours, with a green tint showing the extent of woodlands.  Water features such as lakes, ponds, creeks, marshes, canals, and shorelines (where present) are indicated in detail.  Shows roads and highways of all classes, and sometimes trails.  Railroads are also shown.  National, state, provincial, and county boundaries are demarcated, as are other boundaries such as parks and wildlife refuges.  Other features shown in this series are mines, airstrips and airports, isolated landmark buildings, lookout towers, and more.  The maps are lined with the UTM grid at 1000 meter intervals.

Few maps in this series are recently published.  The manufacturer, Hubbard Scientific, uses data from the US Geological Survey, but USGS rarely updates any of the maps in this series; most use data 20 to 40 years old.  You get them for the depiction of the topography, which rarely changes, not for current roads and city boundaries.  In fact, many of them have an added appeal for their historical interest.  See below for date of the map described on this page.
